Pain Control

Prescription Monitoring System at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center Used to Curb Drug Misuse

To further our commitment to patient safety and wellbeing, each University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center emergency center location participates in the Ohio Automated Rx Reporting System (OARRS). This prescription monitoring system is utilized by emergency departments around the state to assist in eliminating drug misuse and abuse.

UH Elyria Medical Center Safeguards Prescriptions

As a part of this initiative, UH Elyria Medical Center will not provide the following services within the emergency medicine department:

  • Give narcotics/benzodiazepines to go home with from the emergency department
  • Give pain medication shots for chronic pain
  • Prescribe long-acting pain medication for chronic, non-cancer pain
  • Prescribe missed methadone doses
  • Prescribe pain medication if the patient already receives these medications from another doctor or emergency department
  • Refill stolen or lost prescriptions for pain medication or other controlled substances

We appreciate the cooperation of our patients and community members as we strive for a balance between reducing misuse and safeguarding legitimate access to treatment.
