U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals
UH Cleveland Medical Center has again been ranked among the nation’s Best Hospitals in seven adult specialties by U.S. News & World Report.

UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is once again ranked among the nation’s Best Children’s Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, ranking in eight medical and surgical specialties.
Ethisphere’s 2021 Worlds Most Ethical Companies
For the ninth time since 2012, UH has been named a global leader in ethical business practices by the Ethisphere Institute.
Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade
UH Cleveland Medical Center was also honored with an “A” Hospital Safety Score by the Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit healthcare ratings organization. Developed under the guidance of a Blue Ribbon National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign letter grades to more than 2600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by the top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and freely available to the public.
Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association
UH Rainbow’s Marcy R. Horvitz Pediatric Emergency Center, located at UH Cleveland Medical Center, is one of just 22 hospital emergency departments nationwide to receive this year’s Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association. The award, given after a rigorous, peer-reviewed application process, recognizes EDs that are exceptional and innovative in the areas of nursing leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.
Stroke Center Certification
UH Cleveland Medical Center, the first Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center in Northeast Ohio, was re-certified by The Joint Commission and has been approved for the Get With the Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus award with Target: Stroke Elite Plus. This recognition is from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for meeting rigorous quality measures and providing the latest, evidence-based treatments for stroke patients.
Magnet Recognition Program®
University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center was designated as a Magnet organization in 2006, 2010, 2015, by the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®. This prestigious designation recognizes excellence in nursing services. In February 2021, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center is applying for re-designation.
World’s Most Ethical Companies
University Hospitals once again earned global recognition as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies thanks to the culture of integrity that our employees, physicians, volunteers, leaders and Board members uphold. UH captured this global honor for the fifth time and we are in very select company: Only 123 other entities from 19 countries are on the 2017 World’s Most Ethical Companies list, including just six other healthcare providers worldwide. The Ethisphere Institute uses objective, consistent and standardized methods to assess companies based on documented excellence in five areas: ethics and compliance programs; corporate citizenship and responsibility; culture of ethics; governance and leadership; and innovation and reputation.
Outstanding Investigator Awards
Two internationally recognized medical research leaders from UH Cleveland Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have received Outstanding Investigator Awards from the National Institutes of Health. The seven-year, $6.7 million awards are the highest honor and largest individual support grants conferred by NIH. Mukesh K. Jain, MD, received a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Outstanding Investigator Award to study age-related cardiovascular risks.Sanford Markowitz, MD, PhD, received a National Cancer Institute Outstanding Investigator Award to advance promising molecular studies of colon cancer. Dr. Jain is Chief Scientific Officer at UH and at Harrington Discovery Institute; and Chief Research Officer, UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. Dr. Markowitz is head of the GI Cancer Genetics Program at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and a medical oncologist at the UH Seidman Cancer Center.
Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence
UH Cleveland Medical Center is among only four in Northeast Ohio and 5 percent nationally to earn a 2017 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ from Healthgrades, an online consumer resource. This year’s list recognizes 258 hospitals that deliver high-quality care across multiple conditions and procedures, as measured by objective clinical outcomes.
Innovative Award of Excellence
Profiles in Diversity Journal bestowed its 2016 Innovative Award of Excellence on UH Cleveland Medical Center in recognition of our innovative OB/GYN residency program that helps improve maternal health outcomes in low-resource countries. The WONDOOR (Women and Neonates, Diversity Opportunity, Outreach and Research) Program, created by Margaret Larkins-Pettigrew, MD, rotates physicians, residents and students to train Guyanese physicians to become OB/GYN specialists. WONDOOR, in collaboration with Georgetown Public Hospital and the University of Guyana, has helped reduce maternal deaths by 50 percent since 2012. Dr. Larkins-Pettigrew is the Edgar B. Jackson, MD, Chair for Clinical Excellence & Diversity.
