There are many reasons why people develop mental illness. Some are biological or genetic. Some are a result of childhood trauma or overwhelming stress at school, work or home. Sometimes, we simply don't know. Regardless of the reasons, these are health problems like heart disease, cancer or diabetes.

So why does society look at people with mental illness, including substance use disorders, differently? The answer is Stigma.

Join Joey Haddad, President of The Youth Advisory Council (KIDS Rainbow) at University Hospitals, Dr. Sandhya Haryani, child and adolescent psychiatry fellow, and Dr. Sarah Cain Spannagel, Clinical Psychologist at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s, to discuss what is stigma in mental health, the impact of stigma and the role of parents and providers in reducing it. The talk will also provide resources and strategies for building supportive systems in the community.
