Youth Exposure to Gun Violence
Thursday, September 24, 2026 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Understanding Trauma and Supporting Resilience
Gun violence affects children and adolescents in many ways, whether through direct experiences, witnessing violence, exposure through media coverage, or even the fear and uncertainty created by school lockdown drills and community incidents. These experiences can have lasting effects on a child’s emotional well-being, development and sense of safety.
Join experts Mary Gabriel, MD, MSc, Matthew L. Krock, MSSA, LISW-S, Deirdre Martinez, MD, PPH, and Myesha Watkins for an informative webinar exploring how exposure to gun violence impacts youth across different stages of development. Participants will learn about the various forms of trauma exposure, common emotional and behavioral responses, and warning signs that may indicate a child is struggling. The session will also provide practical guidance for parents, schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations on how to support children and teens following traumatic events.
Topics include:
- The scope of youth exposure to gun violence in the United States
- Types of trauma exposure and trauma responses
- Developmental and psychological impacts from early childhood through adolescence
- Emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and physical warning signs
- When and how to seek professional help
- Strategies for supporting healing, resilience, and recovery in children and teens
The session will include dedicated Q&A with the presenters.
The event is free but registration is required.
