Traditional EMT Initial Certification Course

This in-person Initial Certification EMT course equips students with the knowledge, skills, and supervised clinical experience necessary to provide high-quality emergency medical care in the pre-hospital environment. The program is aligned with the Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of Emergency Medical Services (ODPS-EMS) initial certification requirements and prepares graduates to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) cognitive and psychomotor exams.

🕘 Schedule: Mondays, Wednesdays 1800-2200; E/o Sat 0900-1500 (Beginning 8/22)

🏥 Program Overview 

This Traditional EMT Initial Certification Course prepares students with the knowledge, psychomotor skills, and supervised clinical experience necessary to provide high-quality emergency medical care in the prehospital setting. 

This program meets the requirements of the Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of EMS (ODPS-EMS) and prepares graduates to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) cognitive examination. 

🎯 Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion, students will be able to: 

🩺 Patient Assessment & Care 
Perform comprehensive assessments and provide appropriate interventions across the lifespan, including trauma, medical, cardiac, respiratory, obstetric, and pediatric emergencies. 

🫁 Airway & Critical Interventions 
Demonstrate competency in airway management, hemorrhage control, shock management, and basic pharmacology. 

🚑 EMS Operations 
Operate effectively within the EMS system including ambulance operations, scene safety, communication, documentation, and coordination with allied health professionals. 

🤝 Professional Practice 
Apply professionalism, ethics, teamwork, and patient-centered care under medical oversight. 

📜 Certification Eligibility 
Meet requirements for Ohio EMT certification and eligibility to test for the NREMT examination. 

📚 Program Structure & Contact Hours 

🧠 Didactic Instruction 
Anatomy & physiology, EMS systems, patient assessment, medical and trauma emergencies, and EMS operations. 

🛠 Skills Labs & Simulation 
Hands-on psychomotor training and high-fidelity simulation to develop clinical decision-making. 

🏥 Clinical & Field Experience 
Supervised emergency department rotations and field ride-along experiences to meet required patient contact hours. 

✅ Regulatory Compliance 
Curriculum meets or exceeds Ohio initial EMT education standards.

💵 Program Cost: $1,500 (includes textbooks) 
📝 Application Fee: $35 (due at registration) 

📋 Admission Requirements 

Applicants must: 

🎓 Be at least 17 years old and a high school senior (minimum). 
🚗 Maintain a valid driver’s license (or equivalent). 
🏥 Meet clinical affiliation requirements. 
💉 Complete required health clearances (TB, Tetanus, MMR, Hepatitis B, etc.). 
🔍 Complete criminal history statement and drug screening as required. 
📄 Submit all required documentation and fees prior to program start. 

🏅 Certification Eligibility 

Upon successful completion of coursework, labs, clinical/field hours, competencies, and final examinations, students will be eligible to: 

🧠 Sit for the NREMT cognitive examination 
📜 Apply for Ohio EMT certification through the Ohio EMS Board after successful NREMT completion
