Traditional EMT Initial Certification Course

This in-person Initial Certification EMT course equips students with the knowledge, skills, and supervised clinical experience necessary to provide high-quality emergency medical care in the pre-hospital environment. The program is aligned with the Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of Emergency Medical Services (ODPS-EMS) initial certification requirements and prepares graduates to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) cognitive and psychomotor exams.

Traditional EMT Initial Certification Course

Course Dates: Tuesday June 9th - December 15th, 2026

This Traditional EMT Initial Certification Course prepares students with the knowledge, hands-on skills, and supervised clinical experience necessary to provide high-quality emergency medical care in the prehospital environment. The program meets Ohio Department of Public Safety Division of EMS (ODPS-EMS) initial certification requirements and prepares graduates to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) cognitive examination.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

· Perform comprehensive patient assessments and deliver appropriate interventions across the lifespan, including trauma, medical, cardiac, respiratory, obstetric, and pediatric patients.

· Demonstrate competency in airway management, shock and hemorrhage control, basic pharmacology, and other essential prehospital emergency procedures.

· Operate effectively within the EMS system, including ambulance operations, scene safety, communication, documentation, and coordination with allied health professionals.

· Apply professionalism, ethics, teamwork, and patient-centered care under medical oversight in prehospital settings.

· Achieve eligibility for initial Ohio EMT certification and the NREMT examinations.

Program Structure & Contact Hours

This program includes:

· Didactic classroom instruction covering anatomy & physiology, EMS systems, patient assessment, medical and trauma emergencies, and EMS operations.

· Hands-on skills labs and high-fidelity simulation to develop psychomotor skills and clinical decision-making.

· Supervised clinical experience in the emergency department and field ride-along to meet required prehospital contact hours.

· Curriculum that meets or exceeds Ohio’s initial EMT education requirements for certification.

Schedule

Course Dates: June 7th, 2026 – December 15th, 2026

· Tuesdays, Thursdays: 1730-2130

Tuition & Fees

· Program Cost: $1,500 (includes textbooks)

· Application Fee: $35 due at time of registration

Admission Requirements

Applicants must:

· Be at least 17 years old and a senior in high school at minimum.

· Maintain a valid driver’s license (or equivalent).

· Meet any agency or clinical site affiliation requirements.

· Complete required health clearance, including immunizations (e.g., TB, tetanus, MMR, Hepatitis B), and criminal history statement/drug screening as required by clinical partners.

· Submit all required paperwork and fees prior to program start.

Certification Eligibility

Upon successful completion of all coursework, labs, clinical/field hours, skills competencies, and final examinations, students will be eligible to:

· Sit for the NREMT cognitive examinations.

· Apply for Ohio EMT certification through the Ohio EMS Board after successfully passing NREMT.

Career Pathways

Graduates are prepared for employment as Emergency Medical Technicians in:

· Ambulance services

· Fire departments

· Hospital emergency departments

· Industrial and rescue environments

· Medical transport agencies

This EMT certification also serves as a pathway toward Advanced EMT (AEMT) or Paramedic education.
