Paramedic Anatomy & Physiology Prerequisite
Thursday, July 2, 2026 from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM
This is a required prerequisite course providing the essential Anatomy & Physiology foundation needed for success in the paramedic program. Students will learn the structure and function of major body systems, key physiologic processes, and how the human body responds to illness and injury. Designed specifically for future paramedics, this course bridges the gap between EMT-level understanding and the advanced medical knowledge required in paramedic training. Course content is delivered in an accelerated format with instructor-led lectures and guided study. Students must complete the course with an 80% or higher to advance into the Paramedic Program.
Paramedic Anatomy & Physiology Prerequisite Course
This prerequisite Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) course provides the foundational biomedical knowledge required for admission into the Paramedic Program. Designed specifically for future paramedics, the course builds a working understanding of human body systems, structure and function, and the physiologic processes essential to advanced life support (ALS) decision-making.
Using Memmler’s Structure and Function of the Human Body as the primary text, students' progress through a structured, accelerated sequence covering cells, tissues, major organ systems, metabolism, development, and integrated body functions. This course prepares students for the academic depth, pace, and clinical reasoning required in a paramedic curriculum.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will be able to:
• Describe the organization, structure, and function of major human body systems.
• Explain physiologic regulation, homeostasis, and how illness and injury disrupt normal function.
• Apply foundational terminology, chemistry, cellular biology, and tissue concepts to clinical scenarios.
• Demonstrate readiness for advanced coursework in cardiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and trauma management within the Paramedic Program.
• Meet the academic eligibility requirement for entry into the UH EMS Institute Paramedic Program with a minimum score of 80% or higher.
Course Structure
This accelerated course includes:
• Instructor-led lecture covering 21 chapters in a progressive system-based approach.
• Weekly assigned readings, chapter objectives, and medical terminology work.
• Quizzes, objective notebook assignments, and terminology assessments aligned with each chapter.
• Midterm and final written examinations assessing cumulative understanding of core content.
• Journal article analysis/presentation, supporting academic literacy and real-world application.
