About

Jennifer Sweet, MD, FAANS, FACS, is a neurosurgeon and the Director of Movement Disorder Surgery and Psychiatric Surgery, as well as Co-Director of Pain Surgery and Neuromodulation at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. She is the Sheila and Sandy Fox Master Clinician in Neurosurgery and Professor of Neurological Surgery and Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Sweet’s interests include neuromodulation, deep brain stimulation (DBS), movement disorders, cognitive disorders, psychiatric and mood disorders, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, neuropathic pain, cancer pain, drug delivery, and general neurosurgery.

Dr. Sweet earned a bachelor’s degree in premedical studies and French at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She earned her medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. Dr. Sweet completed an internship in General Surgery and residency training in Neurosurgery at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. In addition, she completed fellowship training in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.

An NIH-funded physician-scientist, Dr. Sweet examines brain circuitry in patients with bipolar disorder for possible surgical targeting. She is also the clinical principal investigator of the ReHAB study (REstoring Hand and Arm to Brain), involving the placement of brain and peripheral nerve electrodes to allow patients with spinal cord injury to move their own paralyzed limb. In addition, she is a co-investigator in several other clinical trials, aiming to meaningfully impact scientific discovery for the treatment of diverse diseases using cutting-edge technologies. Dr. Sweet is also highly involved in organized neurosurgery and has held many leadership positions in this area, including Vice President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, President of the Neurosurgery Pain Section, President of Women in Neurosurgery, Board of Directors of the Association of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, Board of Directors of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Chair of the Neurosurgery Guidelines, and Chair of the Joint Guidelines Review Committee for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Furthermore, Dr. Sweet serves as an editor of Neurosurgery and a reviewer for several other scientific journals. Finally, along with helping to educate medical students, residents and fellows, Dr. Sweet has been invited to present at over 120 national and international conferences, has contributed to over 65 peer-reviewed publications, and has written over 10 medical textbook chapters.

Every time I visit Dr. Jennifer Sweet, everyone in her office is pleasant, caring and efficient! ***, her nurse is the best! She's very knowledgeable and caring. I've seen ***, the PA and she's very knowledgeable, efficient and cares about the patients. Dr. Sweet is just Awesome! She is extremely intelligent, does not rush you through, answers all your questions in a way that anyone can understand and truly cares about her patients. Plus she has a great bedside manner and great sense of humor. I wish I could see her for all my medical problems! She is the best physician/surgeon that I've ever gone to. That whole office is just the best!

Dr. Sweet had to tell me bad news as a result text results and refer me to other practitioners. Dr. Sweet is an amazing practitioner and I greatly respect her expertise and understanding when to refer patients to others. She also made me very comfortable and had me laughing. Her CNP is simply phenomenal.
