Portable MolecuLight

Portable MolecuLight i:X allows for imaging of harmful bacteria invisible to human eye

University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center is the first clinical setting in Ohio using a special camera with revolutionary technology that identifies harmful bacteria which may delay healing in patients suffering from chronic wounds.

The MolecuLight i:X is a new technology that can detect harmful bacteria, on and below the surface of the wound, beyond what a physician might see during a standard wound exam. The portable camera takes a photo of a patient’s wound using violet light. Taking the picture is noninvasive, painless and involves zero radiation. Different types of bacteria show as different colors, indicating if and where tissues have certain bacteria levels. When a portion of the wound glows red or cyan in an image from the MolecuLight i:X, it reveals that dangerous bacteria is present.

Based on this picture, the physician can then determine the best wound care plan. Follow-up images with the MolecuLight i:X can also monitor progress, measure wound size, and help guide the patient’s therapy to assist in healing wounds more quickly.
