What Is Trigeminal Neuralgia?
Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a chronic condition that causes sudden, severe, electric shock-like pain in the face. While TN isn’t life-threatening, it can affect quality of life and disrupt everyday activities, such as talking, chewing and smiling. The condition occurs when a blood vessel puts pressure on the trigeminal nerve near the brainstem, which controls sensation in the face and head.
Medication can help manage the symptoms of TN, but many patients require surgery. University Hospitals is the first health system in the world to offer a new minimally invasive treatment called OneRF® Trigeminal Nerve Ablation System.
OneRF® Trigeminal Nerve Ablation System
During the procedure, radiofrequency energy creates heat to treat the nerve fibers that transmit pain. Patients are sedated during the procedure. A needle is inserted through the cheek, guided by X-ray, to the trigeminal nerve.
Benefits for Patients
- Highly Effective: Most patients experience 95% pain relief following the procedure.*
- Minimally Invasive: The procedure is an effective option for patients who aren’t candidates for major surgery.
- Precision and Safety: The system uses highly accurate targeting of nerve tissue, improving safety, reducing treatment time and increasing patient comfort.
- Rapid Pain Relief: The treatment often provides immediate pain relief.
Who’s a Candidate for this Procedure?
Ideal candidates for the procedure are patients with TN who haven’t had success with medication and have symptoms in the cheek and jaw. OneRF offers a minimally invasive alternative to brain surgery. Older patients or those with medical comorbidities are also good candidates for this treatment option.
*Radiofrequency ablation has been shown to provide immediate pain relief in up to 98 % of patients, with 80 % remaining pain free 12 months post procedure [Dessy R Emril & Kok-Yuen Ho (2010) Treatment of trigeminal neuralgia: role of radiofrequency ablation, Journal of Pain Research, , 249-254, DOI: 10.2147/JPR.S1445].
Indications for Use: The NeuroOne OneRF® Trigeminal Nerve Ablation System is indicated for use in procedures to create radiofrequency lesions for the treatment of pain, or for lesioning nerve tissue for functional neurosurgical procedures. FDA 510(k) Clearance: K251243.
CAUTION: Federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a physician.
