If your kidneys aren’t functioning properly and can't get rid of waste and excess fluids on their own, you may have end-stage kidney disease or kidney failure.

When this occurs, the kidney doctors at UH will help you determined whether you need dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Dialysis treatment effectively takes the place of your kidneys, helping remove waste and extra fluid from your blood. There are two types of dialysis:

• Hemodialysis: A dialysis machine filters waste and excess fluids from your blood.
• Peritoneal dialysis: A thin tube or catheter is inserted into your abdomen fills your abdominal cavity with a dialysis solution that absorbs waste and excess fluids. The dialysis solution then drains from your body and the waste is eliminated.

If dialysis isn’t sufficient, a kidney transplant may be considered. The UH Division of Nephrology collaborates with the UH Transplant Institute from the initial consultation to the actual kidney transplant surgery to the follow-up visits.
