Real-Time Heart Monitors
Real-time heart monitoring, also called mobile cardiac telemetry, uses a small, portable device to monitor heart activity during daily activities. Like an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), the device records electrical signals in the heart, but for a longer period of time. The device can monitor a patient for 24 hours a day for a period of up to 30 days.
Real-time heart monitoring devices share heart activity data for immediate review by a healthcare provider. The patient can also activate the device when they feel symptoms. The device can detect an abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia) such as atrial fibrillation. Real-time heart monitors are particularly useful for severe arrhythmias that require quick expert medical guidance.
Some real-time monitors are designed for use only during check-ins over a phone call. This type allows the patient to call a monitoring center and transmit their data while on the phone.
