Procedures to Repair Nasal Valve Collapse

The nasal valve is located in the lower part of the nose and opens and closes with each breath. Its main function is to regulate and filter air flow before it reaches the lungs.

Nasal valve collapse occurs when one or both sides of the nose closes while breathing in. It can cause difficulty breathing and persistent nasal congestion. Common causes include long, thin nostrils, a deviated nasal septum or nasal valve deformities.

The facial plastic surgeons at University Hospitals Ear, Nose & Throat Institute offer two advanced in-office procedures to treat this condition:

VivAer Nasal Remodeling

Under local anesthesia, the surgeon uses a radiofrequency wand to reshape the nasal cartilage and open the nasal valve. There are no incisions, a low risk of complications and you can return to normal activities immediately.

The procedure takes about 15 – 20 minutes and can provide long-term relief from nasal congestion; improve sleep quality; and reduce the need for nasal sprays, breathing strips and oral medications. Post-procedure discomfort is typically mild and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen.

Latera Implant

Under local anesthesia, the surgeon inserts a small, two-pronged implant to strengthen and support weakened nasal walls. Made of bioabsorbable materials, the implant is absorbed by the body over time and helps support the nose.

This minimally invasive procedure is highly effective with a low risk of complications. Most patients report a significant reduction in nasal symptoms and the ability to breathe more freely. Post-procedure discomfort is typically mild and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
