Five Stars for Quality: University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center Achieves Highest CMS Rating

ELYRIA, OH – UH Elyria Medical Center earned the highest possible rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that administers Medicare. CMS rates hospitals from one to five stars, based on their safety, efficiency and patient experience. UH Elyria Medical Center is one of just 407 hospitals in the United States, and the only hospital in Lorain County, to earn this designation in 2020. Additionally, UH Elyria Medical Center is an accredited Chest Pain Center and a certified Primary Stroke Center.

“For nearly 112 years, UH Elyria Medical Center has cared for the people of this community,” said Kristi Sink, MHA, FACHE, President, UH Elyria. “Earning the highest possible rating from CMS is an honor and reinforces our commitment to providing our patients with the highest quality of care and compassion. We strive every day to serve our community as the health care provider of choice in Lorain County.”

CMS calculates star ratings based on a variety of more than 100 quality measures divided into seven categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging. Scores reflect common conditions, such as heart attack and pneumonia, and the overall rating indicates how each hospital performs, on average, compared to more than 4,500 other hospitals in the U.S.

Other hospitals in the University Hospitals health system that earned five stars this rating period include UH Ahuja, UH Conneaut and UH Geneva medical centers.

UH Elyria Medical Center is the only hospital in Lorain County offering cardiac surgery and a full-service Level III catheterization lab. These services provide patients who experience chest pain or heart attack timely access to experts, the latest technologies and best treatments, close to home. The emergency departments at UH Amherst and Avon health centers have been awarded Freestanding Emergency Department Cardiac Care Certification from the American College of Cardiology.
