Curriculum

Through clinical rotations, individual supervision, conferences and structured didactic settings, fellows will learn all major concepts of addiction. Furthermore, we expect all fellows to engage in clinical projects, teaching and public health advocacy, hoping to refine their knowledge and confidence in the subject to become addiction leaders in their communities.

Didactics

Concurrently, UH Addiction Psychiatry and MetroHealth Medical Center Addiction Medicine fellows have a half day of protected time each Wednesday afternoon for collaborative formal learning with a competency-driven curriculum. Local and national experts lead these sessions in addiction from all three academic medical centers in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Fellowship curriculum on Wednesdays includes:

  • Addiction medicine Grand Rounds sponsored by MetroHealth Medical Center
  • Balint Group
  • Journal Club Sessions
  • Addiction medicine lectures by faculty
  • Addiction psychiatry and psychotherapy lectures by faculty 
  • Guest speakers
  • Clinical case conferences
  • Addiction study sessions
  • Field trips

  • Behavioral treatments for addiction
  • Spirituality and addiction
  • Pharmacotherapy for addiction
  • Dual diagnosis
  • Inpatient and outpatient detoxification
  • Pain and addiction
  • Addiction in adolescents and young adults
  • Late life addictions
  • Addiction in special populations
  • Harm reduction and relapse prevention 
  • Social policy in addictions
  • Racial and gender disparities in addictions

Addiction Bootcamp

Course Director: Akhil Anand MD

For the first month of the year, both University Hospitals Addiction Psychiatry and MetroHealth Medical Center Addiction Medicine fellows will have a half day of protected time each Friday afternoon to meet and learn introductory material in addiction medicine and addiction psychiatry.


Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds

Weekly Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds on Friday mornings at 8:00 a.m. highlight the work of outstanding local and national scholars on topics across the psychiatric spectrum, including addictions. Staying current as a general psychiatrist is essential to being an excellent addiction psychiatrist. Fellows are asked to present a Grand Rounds lecture as part of their scholarly activity.
