Application for 2024-2025 will be accepted beginning February 12, 2024.

University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center / Case Western Reserve University Department of Otolaryngology is pleased to announce two research fellow positions for the academic year of 2024-2025. The department is offering the positions as remote clinical research positions beginning in the June/July 2024 timeframe. The fellow will have direct access to and work closely with faculty on a variety of projects including otology, rhinology, pediatric ENT, laryngology, and head and neck. University Hospitals Department of Otolaryngology will offer travel expenses to and from Cleveland twice during the year and will pay for registration and travel expenses associated with up to two academic meetings for podium presentations. The Department will also pay the credentialing costs associated with the onboarding of the fellow into the system. The positions are otherwise unfunded.

Fellows will be expected to organize and complete multiple clinical research projects throughout the year. There will be formal research methodology training through lectures and one-on-one mentoring to obtain competency in the various areas of the fellow's personalized research plan as noted below. Additionally, the fellow will have opportunities to participate in departmental didactics and quality meetings. Research projects are predominantly clinical trials, and clinical outcomes research using databases and meta-analysis in all areas of Otolaryngology. Residents are expected to prepare one manuscript for submission each year of residency.

Program Goals:

  1. Provide medical students and aspiring Otolaryngologists with clinical research skills in preparation for a career that includes clinical and translational research.
  2. Develop competency in several key areas as delineated in each fellow's personalized research plan. This includes several areas such as:
    • General Medical and Scientific Knowledge
    • Clinical Research Skills- including research study development and design, biostatistics, writing skills, publication, and authorship standards.
    • Communication and Organizational skills-function as a lead member as part of an inter-professional research team.
    • Professionalism- including education in the responsible conduct of research as part of Institutional Review Board standards.
  3. Build upon the fellow's skills and academic credentials to improve their likelihood of matching at a strong Otolaryngology training program. The research fellow will be involved in various stages of clinical research projects from day one. All projects have the goal of obtaining peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international meetings.
  4. Participate in the end-of-the-year ENT Institute Research Symposium in a detailed presentation of the clinical research projects performed over the course of the fellowship.

Applicants must be current or former students at US accredited osteopathic or allopathic medical schools. For fellows maintaining their current medical school affiliation, there will be an opportunity to complete in-person clinical rotations within the Otolaryngology department. Interested parties should provide a CV, personal statement including goals for the one-year position, and one letter of recommendation. Please comment in the personal statement if you have completed CITI training, and if you have experience with REDCAP and IRB submission processes.
