UH Geneva Medical Center Earns Top Hospital Compare Rating

Comparison Ratings that Help Consumers Compare and Choose Among Hospitals

ASHTABULA COUNTYUniversity Hospitals Geneva Medical Center has received a top rating of five stars, according to Medicare’s summary rating system based on 11 patient-experience metrics. Nationally, Medicare awarded the five-star rating to just 112 hospitals, which is about 3 percent of eligible hospitals judged following a survey of discharged adult patients. Only nine hospitals in Ohio earned five stars.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) introduced star ratings in 2015 on Hospital Compare, the agency’s public information website, to make it easier for consumers to choose a hospital and understand the quality of care they deliver.

The star ratings relate to patients’ experience of care at more than 4,000 Medicare-certified acute care hospitals. The ratings are based on data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey (HCAHPS) measures that are included in Hospital Compare. HCAHPS has been in use since 2006 to measure patients’ perspectives of hospital care, and includes topics such as:

  • How well nurses and doctors communicated with patients
  • How responsive hospital staff were to patient needs
  • How clean and quiet hospital environments were
  • How well patients were prepared for post-hospital settings

The Hospital Compare ratings are an example of how CMS is committed to helping consumers make informed health care decisions.

UH Geneva Medical Center continues to earn recognition for high-quality care from public and private organizations. The hospital was named Critical Access Hospital to Know, according to the 2016 list published in Becker’s Hospital Review. It also received the Premier QUEST® Award for High-value Healthcare – Citation of Merit for achieving top performance in four of six quality-care criteria.
