Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Relief with Vascular Rehabilitation at UH

University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, offers the Vascular Rehabilitation Program for those who have difficulty walking because of PAD or circulatory problems in their legs. PAD causes pain, cramping, burning, limping and a tired feeling in the legs even when walking a short distance. For PAD patients, the degree of disability is similar to that of heart failure.

Rehabilitation Focuses on Healthy Diet, Exercise and Smoking Cessation

University Hospitals Vascular Rehabilitation Program focuses on all aspects of vascular health, including:

  • Smoking cessation
  • Behavioral counseling
  • Stress management

  • Group or individualized exercise therapy

A 16 week exercise therapy plan is designed for each participant by the vascular rehabilitation team. The exercise plan begins with individualized and monitored exercise and then leads into behavioral reinforcement and ongoing support. Exercise sessions are conveniently located at both University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and University Hospitals Minoff Health Center at Chagrin Highlands.

Walk Away from PAD

The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology recommend combating PAD with a supervised walking program. At UH, we assist patients with motivation and coaching during supervised treadmill-walking exercises designed to improve muscle tone, function and walking distance.
