About
Krystal Tomei, MD, MPH, is a pediatric neurosurgeon at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and a Professor of Neurosurgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She is the Program Director for the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center/Case Western Reserve University Neurological Surgery Residency Program. She is the Associate Designated Institutional Official at University Hospitals. Dr. Tomei was named to the UH Cleveland Medical Center staff in 2014.
Dr. Tomei is board certified in neurological surgery and pediatric neurosurgery. Her special interests include craniosynostosis, Chiari malformations, congenital spinal disorders, tethered cord and spina bifida. She has been voted a Cleveland Top Doctor since 2019.
Dr. Tomei earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry with honors from the University of Florida (Gainesville, Florida), where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She earned her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Florida College of Medicine and a Master of Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health (Boston, Massachusetts). Dr. Tomei completed her residency in neurosurgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School (Newark, New Jersey) and a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children’s Hospital (Phoenix, Arizona).
Dr. Tomei is a fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is actively involved in the national neurosurgical organizations, health policy and advocacy, and medical education. She has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications, editorials and textbook chapters. Among other honors and recognition, she is the recipient of the University Hospitals Distinguished Physician Class of 2022; UH Cleveland Medical Center Anton Fellowship Recipient, 2017; AMA Foundation Excellence in Medicine Award, 2017; University of Florida College of Medicine Outstanding Young Alumni Award, 2017; and Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award, 2012.
