Biography
Warren M. Sobol, MD, sees patients with medical and surgical diseases of the retina. He also serves as Chief of the Surgical Retinal service at the Veterans Hospital adjacent to the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Dr. Sobol’s training includes undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, where he attended as a Morehead scholar. He then went on to graduate from Duke University School of Medicine, completed an internal medicine internship at Wright State University School of Medicine before completing an ophthalmology residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. His final training for retinal surgical and medical disease was completed at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
Dr. Sobol brings a long history of clinical experience after practicing for 28 years in Dayton, Ohio, with retina physicians and surgeons. During his years in Dayton, he was active with resident training both at The Ohio State University as an assistant clinical professor and at the local osteopathic residency training program in Dayton. He takes pleasure from the numerous ophthalmology residents who studied retinal diseases under his tutelage; some of those students went on to complete retinal fellowships and enter private practice.
Clinical Duties
Dr. Sobol will be involved in the treatment of surgical and medical retina diseases at the Bolwell (UH Cleveland Medical Center) and Landerbrook (UH Landerbrook Health Center) clinic locations and operate at UH Cleveland Medical Center and Suburban Ambulatory Surgical Center on Green Road. In addition, he will actively oversee the University Hospitals ophthalmology residents for their retinal clinical training and operating room experience at the VA main campus and Parma satellite clinic.
Clinical Interests
Since 2002, Dr. Sobol has made an effort to give back to the field of ophthalmology as a volunteer surgeon traveling overseas, most recently as a volunteer surgeon with Surgical Eye Expeditions. He has equipped an operating room for retinal surgery as well as staffed and trained local ophthalmologists in the country of St. Vincent and The Grenadines, performing retinal procedures for patients who would otherwise have no option for retinal care. He has presented his experiences with retina surgery in a developing country setting at the American Society of Retinal Surgeons meeting in 2014, and continues to travel overseas yearly to perform humanitarian work.
Personal Data
Dr. Sobol and his wife are particularly proud of their five children, all of whom have accompanied him at various times for overseas volunteer work. They have two grandchildren, one who is a “native Clevelander”, and partially responsible for their relocation to the Cleveland vicinity. Dr. Sobol and his wife have enjoyed their new personal and professional lives in Cleveland and he looks forward to providing expert and compassionate care as well as continued successful teaching interactions with the university’s active residency program.

This was by far the best experience I have had in the UH system. The office staff were courteous, friendly, and helpful. Dr. Sobol was attentive and thorough, thoughtful and empathic, and an excellent diagnostician. He explained my condition and arranged a timely referral for further care. I felt so relieved and hopeful after this visit.

Industry Relationships
University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.
UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.

As of December 31, 2016, Warren Sobol did not disclose any Outside Relationships with Industry.
