About

Joseph D. McShannic, MD, specializes in non-operative sports medicine and community emergency medicine. His practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal issues of patients of all ages. He has expertise in acute and chronic joint pain, ultrasound-guided injections, injury management, sports-related concussions, fracture care, splinting and sports event coverage. He sees patients at University Hospitals Baney Road Health Center in Ashland, Ohio, and continues to work in the Emergency Department at University Hospitals.

Dr. McShannic is an Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He currently serves as team physician for the Ashland University Eagles and multiple local area high schools, including Ashland, Hillsdale, Mapleton, Black River and Loudonville. He has previously provided medical care for the Cleveland Browns, Lake Erie College Storm, Cleveland Marathon and multiple other local teams and sporting events.

Dr. McShannic attended The University of Akron, earning a Bachelor of Science in natural sciences. He went on to obtain his Doctor of Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) in Rootstown, Ohio. Dr. McShannic’s postdoctoral training included an emergency medicine residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida, where he served as Chief Resident and worked as a flight physician for Reva Air Ambulance. Following his residency, Dr. McShannic completed a primary care sports medicine fellowship at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.

Dr. McShannic has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in the fields of emergency medicine and sports medicine. He has presented regionally and nationally at annual meetings of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the Florida Chapter Division of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (FLAAEM). He holds active memberships in professional societies, including AMSSM, ACEP and American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM).
