About

Christopher Furey, MD, is a nationally recognized orthopedic spine surgeon and leader in the treatment of complex spinal disorders. As Co-Director of University Hospitals Spine Institute, and the Henry H. Bohlman, MD, Chair in Spine Surgery, Dr. Furey is dedicated to advancing spine care through clinical excellence, innovation and education. He also serves as Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Furey specializes in the surgical and nonsurgical treatment of a wide range of spinal conditions, including adult scoliosis, degenerative spine disorders, spinal trauma and athletic injuries involving the spine. Known for his patient-centered approach, he works closely with each individual to develop personalized treatment plans designed to relieve pain, restore function and improve quality of life.

After earning his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Dr. Furey completed a general surgery internship and an orthopaedic surgery research fellowship at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. He then completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Tufts–New England Medical Center, followed by advanced fellowship training in orthopaedic spine surgery at Duke University Hospital.

Board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Furey remains actively involved in advancing the field of spine surgery through research, teaching and mentorship. His research has led to over 250 scientific publications, book chapters, and presentations. He regularly leads educational seminars at the national and international levels, including the North American Spine Society and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery. As a respected educator, Dr. Furey helps train the next generation of orthopedic surgeons and spine specialists while contributing to ongoing innovations in spine care.

As Chief of the Orthopedic Spine Section at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Dr. Furey has guided the Institution’s reputation for excellence in spine care locally and nationally. He is the Spine Care Consultant for the Cleveland Browns and numerous collegiate athletic programs. Dr. Furey also has a strong interest in advocacy for orthopedic patients and providers. He is past president of the Ohio Orthopedic Society and currently serves on the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery Board of Councilors. In these roles, he helps shape policy at both the state and national levels for the improvement in care of patients with musculoskeletal conditions.
