About

Brian Young, MD, is a board-certified general surgeon at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center specializing in critical care, emergency general surgery and trauma surgery.

After earning undergraduate degrees from The University of Chicago in 2010 (Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry), Dr. Young went on to earn a Master of Arts in Medical Science from Loyola University Chicago (Chicago, Illinois) in 2011. He obtained his medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine (St. Louis, Missouri) in 2015.

In June 2019, Dr. Young completed a research fellow at MetroHealth Medical Center (Cleveland, Ohio). He also did a residency in general surgery at UH Cleveland Medical Center/Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine from 2015 to 2022 and a fellowship in surgical critical care at Strong Memorial Hospital of The University Of Rochester Medical Center (Rochester, New York) from 2022 to 2023.

As a medical researcher, Dr. Young’s activities have included clinical research at UH Cleveland Medical Center and MetroHealth Medical Center in the areas of in trauma systems, violence, opioids, palliative care, burns and antibiotic stewardship; and translational research for a testing apparatus used in a novel surgical technique for biceps tendon repair at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He has contributed original publications to a variety of peer-reviewed journals, including American Journal of Surgery, Injury, Journal of Surgical Research, Surgical Infections and Arthroscopy.

As an educator, Dr. Young’s experience encompasses medical student, resident and community teaching appointments, including teaching a workshop on suturing for MS1 and MS2 medical students at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and instructing inmates on such topics as tobacco and drug use, HIV education and tattoo safety at the Saint Louis County Juvenile Detention Center (St. Louis, Missouri). He has also served as a committee member on the Youth Antiviolence Committee for the Northern District of Ohio, the Youth Antiviolence Committee for the City of Cleveland, and the Resident Associate Society - American College of Surgeons.

Among other honors and awards, Dr. Young is the recipient of the Fratianne Research Fellowship – MetroHealth Medical Center (2017 – 2019); Allen Research Fellowship – UH Cleveland Medical Center (2017 – 2019); Sawyer Award – Surgical Infections Society (2019); Resident Research Day Award – 1st Place – UH Cleveland Medical Center (2019); ABSITE Award – UH Cleveland Medical Center (2017); and University of Chicago Summer Research Grant (2009).

Dr. Young has presented at meetings of the Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma, Midwest Surgical Association, Surgical Infections Society, American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, Ohio American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, Ohio Committee on Trauma, Academic Surgical Congress, American Burn Association and Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma, among other organizations. Professional medical societies in which Dr. Young is a member include the American College of Surgeons, Surgical Infections Society, American Association for Surgery of Trauma, Resident and Associate Society of the American College of Surgeons, and American Burn Association.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
