About
Chris I. Wong Ciepiel MD, MPH, CPPS, is a board-certified pediatric hematologist-oncologist with a dual clinical role as a medical oncologist focusing on adolescents and young adults with solid tumors at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center and as a pediatric hematologist-oncologist at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Wong is the Associate Chief Medical Officer at UH Cleveland Medical Center for Cancer and Neurological Services. She has also served as the Medical Director of Quality and Safety for UH Seidman Cancer Center and for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Division at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s Angie Fowler Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Institute, since her arrival at UH in 2021.
Dr. Wong received her Doctor of Medicine in her home country at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, receiving record-setting academic achievement and leadership awards. She completed her pediatrics residency through the Boston Combined Residency Program at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School and Boston Medical Center/Boston University School of Medicine. This was followed by a pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship through Harvard’s Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center.
Dr. Wong completed additional training through the Harvard Medical School Fellowship in Patient Safety/Quality and became a Certified Professional in Patient Safety through the National Patient Safety Foundation and Institute for Health Care Improvement. She also received a Master of Public Health with a focus on clinical effectiveness from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Dr. Wong joined UH after several years as part of the faculty at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital. She has over a decade of experience as a quality improvement leader both in and outside adult and pediatric acute care settings nationally and has led program-building initiatives across Latin American countries. She has received national recognition and media coverage for her work and has authored publications, editorials and books, while holding leadership roles in national safety collaboratives.
Dr. Wong frequently travels with her husband and children to Puerto Rico to visit family and support local quality improvement initiatives.
