About

Jean Claude Uwamungu, MD, is an attending cardiologist and Director of Global Health at University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. He is highly skilled in the diagnosis and medical treatment of common and complex heart conditions, including coronary artery disease, heart rhythm disorders, heart valve disease and heart failure.

Dr. Uwamungu earned his medical degree from the University of Rwanda in Butare, Rwanda. He practiced as a generalist physician in Rwanda, served as Director of Medical Education for Partners in Health in Rwanda, and completed the Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He then completed an internal medicine residency and cardiovascular disease fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York.

Dr. Uwamungu is dual board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease, with additional certification in nuclear cardiology and echocardiography. He is passionate about chronic disease management and health equity in rural and urban communities.

Prior to joining University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute, Dr. Uwamungu was an attending cardiologist at Ochsner-Louisiana State University Monroe Medical Center (Monroe, Louisiana) and Assistant Professor in the Section of Cardiology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (Shreveport, Louisiana).

Dr. Uwamungu is an active member of the American College of Physicians and American College of Cardiology. In his spare time, he enjoys long distance running.
