About

Varun Sundaram, MD, PhD, FRCP (UK), is a heart failure cardiologist at University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute and an associate professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is also the Section Chief of Heart Failure at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veteran Affairs Medical Center.

Dr. Sundaram earned his medical degree from Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai, India. He completed internal medicine and cardiovascular medicine training at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, following which he moved to London, UK for clinical and research fellowships in heart failure at the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital. In 2020, he completed a doctorate in epidemiology at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College, London, where he focused on heart failure phenotyping using nationwide electronic healthcare records. Additionally, he is currently building expertise in the methodology of clinical trials by taking an MSc in Clinical Trials at the Nuffield Department of Public Health, University of Oxford.

Dr. Sundaram is a recipient of multiple nationally competitive research awards including the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 2016, he was awarded the prestigious Eric N Prystowsky Early Career Researcher Award by the Heart Rhythm Society for his investigation into the role of biventricular pacing in heart failure patients with very wide QRS (> 180 ms). He has also presented his heart failure research work at the Late Breaking Clinical Science Sessions at the American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology-Heart Failure Congress. In 2021, shortly after joining the UH Cleveland Medical Center faculty, Dr. Sundaram was the recipient of Teacher of the Year awards for both the internal medicine residency and cardiovascular medicine fellowship.

Dr. Sundaram runs an active research team, including postdoc/research fellows, with a central focus on epidemiology and clinical trials in heart failure. He frequently lectures as an invited or keynote speaker at national and international conferences. He was previously a visiting faculty at internationally respected universities including the Imperial College, London (Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer), National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center, Osaka, Japan (Visiting Researcher), and is currently a Visiting Professor at the All India Institute of Medicine of Medical Sciences, AP, India. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians, United Kingdom and an elected fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Glasgow.
