About
Cathy Sila MD, FAAN, FAHA, is the Chair of the Department of Neurology at University Hospitals. She holds the Gilbert W. Humphrey Endowed Chair in Neurology and was the first Distinguished Senior Attending Physician in Neurology at University Hospitals. A Professor of Neurology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Dr. Sila is an internationally recognized vascular neurologist. She previously served as the vice chair in the Department of Neurology for Clinical Activities & Quality and Director of the University Hospitals System Stroke Program, which is recognized as a model of system integration for healthcare delivery.
Dr. Sila is a recognized expert in the prevention and treatment of stroke and neurologic complications of heart disease and defining outcomes for clinical trials. As the first woman to chair neurology at University Hospitals, her priorities include ensuring access to innovative, high-value care integrated throughout the health system; supporting the provider-patient relationship and experience; training the next generation of vascular neurologists through the many fellowships and one of the largest neurology residency programs in the country; and promoting research that improves the quality of life for patients with neurologic diseases.
Dr. Sila received undergraduate degrees in chemistry and zoology and graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She completed her neurology residency at the Mayo Clinic, followed by fellowship training in cerebrovascular research at the Cleveland Clinic. She has extensive clinical research, research administration and core lab experience for more than 100 clinical trials. Dr. Sila is also a data element developer for the FDA and NINDS; and an expert panel advisor for CMS, emerging technologies and therapeutics.
The recipient of numerous honors, Dr. Sila was elected to the AHA/ASA and AAN executive committees and appointed to national directorship and institutional leadership boards. She was an inaugural UH Distinguished Senior Attending Physician and has received awards from the American Heart Association National Stroke Council, YWCA Women of Professional Excellence and Crain's Cleveland Business Healthcare Hero. She is consistently named among America's Top Doctors by Castle-Connelly and is one of their Exceptional Women in Medicine.
