About

Jonathan Shoag, MD, is a board-certified urologist at University Hospitals and an associate professor of urology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is also a member of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and an adjunct clinical professor of urology at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Shoag specializes in the care of patients with prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancer.

Dr. Shoag is the recipient of a Damon Runyon Physician-Scientist Training Award, an American Urological Association Research Scholar Award, a Vinney Scholars Award and multiple NIH grants. He is a co-investigator on a national PCORI grant and the Cleveland African American Prostate Cancer Project. His work thus far has yielded first author publication in journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Oncology, JCI and JCO. His current work is focused on using large data to better diagnose, treat and understand the biology of prostate cancer.

Dr. Shoag was born and raised in the greater Cleveland area. He earned his undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He then went on to Harvard Medical School, where he was in the Harvard–MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) program and graduated magna cum laude. He completed his general surgery internship, urology residency and urologic oncology fellowship at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell, during which time he earned his master's degree and served as an instructor in urology.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
