About
Thomas Senage, MD, PhD, is an adult cardiac surgeon at University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute.
Prior to moving to Cleveland in 2026, Dr. Senage was instrumental in setting up a minimally invasive video-assisted mitral surgery program and an aortic valve repair and reconstruction program at Nantes University Hospital in France. Under his leadership, the hospital’s heart transplantation results were among the top three in his country in one-year outcomes. Dr. Senage was appointed as Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2023.
In addition to his aortic and mitral valve experience, Dr. Senage’s areas of expertise include heart and lung transplantation, mechanical assist device implantation (VAD and TAH), complex cardiac redo surgery and surgery for atrial fibrillation.
Dr. Senage earned his medical degree from Nantes University Medical School in Nantes, France. He completed his cardiothoracic surgery residency at Nantes University Hospital and his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, England. Dr. Senage also pursued postdoctoral training in epidemiology at Nantes University Hospital.
Dr. Senage is passionate about teaching and has trained surgeons all over France and Europe in minimally invasive mitral surgery, Maze surgery, aortic arch surgery and aortic valve reconstruction. He has been published extensively about heart transplantation following implantation of a mechanical total artificial heart.
