About
Amrou Sarraj, MD, is the Director of the Cerebrovascular Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Director of Stroke Systems at University Hospitals Neurological Institute, Professor of neurology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and George M Humphrey II endowed chair. Dr. Sarraj is an internationally recognized vascular neurologist and clinician scientist with primary interests in endovascular thrombectomy and optimal patient selection.
Dr. Sarraj graduated from Damascus School of Medicine in 2005. After finishing an internship at the University of Illinois Chicago, he completed his residency and fellowship in vascular neurology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 2012. Prior to his move to Cleveland, he held the positions of tenured associate professor of neurology; Director for the Vascular Neurology Fellowship program; Chief of General Neurology Service; and Vice-Chair, Clinical Quality at UTHealth Houston.
Dr. Sarraj is the Global Principal Investigator (PI) for the SELECT LATE trial, an ongoing phase III multicenter trial evaluating endovascular thrombectomy for stroke patients presenting 24 to 72 hours from their last known well time. He leads the ATLAS individual patient-data (IPD) meta-analysis, a major international collaboration pooling data from six global randomized trials to consolidate and analyze the efficacy of endovascular therapy across large-core stroke patient subgroups. Dr. Sarraj was the Global PI of SELECT2 trial, a recently completed, groundbreaking, international randomized controlled trial that demonstrated efficacy and safety of endovascular thrombectomy in patients with large core strokes. He also oversaw the SELECT trial, recently completed a multicenter U.S. study for imaging selection prior to endovascular thrombectomy and has served as site PI for multiple other clinical trials.
Dr. Sarraj has numerous first and last-author publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, JAMA, JAMA Neurology, Lancet Neurology, Annals of Neurology, Stroke and several other high-impact journals. He has presented his research at multiple plenary sessions nationally and internationally. For his exceptional contributions to advancing clinical research, he was honored with a 2024 Top 10 Clinical Research Achievement Award by the Clinical Research Forum for his monumental work on the SELECT2 trial. He was also awarded the “Mordecai Y. T. Globus New Investigator Award in Stroke” in 2013 and the “Stroke Care in Emergency Medicine Award” in 2020 from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
