About

Susan Kate Sandstrom, RN-MSN, APRN-BC, AOCN, is an advanced oncology certified nurse (AOCN) in radiation oncology at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center and the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her roles include follow-up and symptom management of cancer patients receiving radiation therapy and the development of nursing research initiatives. She has also served on the UH Seidman Cancer Center Breast Cancer Task Force committee and the Breast Cancer Medical Management committee.

After receiving an Associate Degree in nursing from Michael J. Owens Community College (Toledo, Ohio), Sandstrom earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Bowling Green University/Medical College of Ohio (Toledo, Ohio). She went on to earn a Master of Science in nursing (Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Program) from Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing/Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio), where she graduated Magna Cum Laude.

As a researcher, Sandstrom has served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on studies related to oncology nursing and radiation oncology. As an invited speaker, she has lectured and presented at a number of local and national meetings, symposiums and grand rounds, presenting on such topics as supportive care for patients receiving radiation therapy; head and neck cancer survivorship; breast cancer risk, screening, early detection and chemoprevention; and treatment options for patients with kidney cancer.

Sandstrom has published extensively in oncology nursing textbooks and peer-reviewed medical journals, including Journal of the Advanced Practitioner in Oncology, The Nurse Practitioner, Journal of Immunotherapy and Seminars in Oncology Nursing. Among other awards and honors, she is the recipient of the APP 2023 Nurse Educator Award, University Hospitals; nominee for the APN Nurse Excellence Awards, University Hospitals; and an American Cancer Society Master of Nursing Scholarship.
