About

Amma Owusu-Ansah, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics whose career focuses on improving access to state-of-the-art medical care, including disease modifying therapies for children with sickle cell disease (SCD) and blood disorders worldwide. Her main areas of expertise are SCD, benign hematology and global hematology.

Dr. Owusu-Ansah graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School. She is the physician lead for the Pediatric Sickle Cell Anemia Center at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. The center is a member of the National Alliance of Sickle Cell Centers. Dr. Owusu-Ansah’s current interests include improving health outcomes for transition-aged adolescents and young adults through implementation of an evidence-based transition program and teaching curriculum, increasing access of pediatric SCD patients to transformative therapies (gene therapy and bone marrow transplantation) and building hematology capacity to improve outcomes in limited resource settings.

Dr. Owusu-Ansah is the site Principal Investigator for the HIBISCUS-2 Trial – a global, phase 3 study evaluating the efficacy and safety of Etavopivat in adolescents and adults with SCD. She collaborates with the Gurkan Lab in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Case Western Reserve University, on the development of point-of-access devices for assessing novel endpoints of response to therapy in SCD. She is also the site Principal Investigator for MULTI-MUSIQOLs (MULTIsite feasibility of MUSIc therapy to address Quality of Life in SCD), a collaboration between University Hospitals, Case Western Reserve University, University of California Irvine and University of California San Francisco. In addition, Dr. Owusu-Ansah serves as a Children’s Hospital Co-Lead of the Outcomes Acceleration for Kids (OAK) sickle cell domain for the state of Ohio. Among other awards and honors, she is the recipient of the Pediatric Hematology Oncology Faculty Teaching Award, 2021-2022, 2023-2024 and 2025-2026.
