About

Grant Nelson, MD, is a fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine and shoulder surgeon at University Hospitals, dedicated to helping patients get back in the game — whether that’s on the field, on the court or simply enjoying an active life.

As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Dr. Nelson enjoys teaching and mentoring the next generation of physicians while staying at the forefront of innovative care. He specializes in the treatment of acute and chronic conditions of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle, delivering tailored treatments that prioritize function, performance and long-term wellness.

Dr. Nelson has published numerous peer-reviewed research papers, including many in his special interest area of shoulder and knee sports injuries. He holds active memberships in leading professional societies, including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Ohio Orthopaedic Society.

Dr. Nelson graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biochemistry from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. During his undergraduate studies, he served as an on-campus EMT and provided sideline medical coverage for the university’s various athletic programs while also engaging in laboratory and clinical research. Dr. Nelson then earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, graduating with honors. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency training at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, during which time he continued pursuing his research interests and provided physician coverage for the United States Football League (USFL) and Cleveland-area high schools.

After residency, Dr. Nelson refined his expertise through a sports medicine fellowship at the prestigious Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Denver, Colorado. During his fellowship, he served as a team physician for the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, NCAA Division I March Madness basketball tournament and local high schools.

Dr. Nelson is excited to bring high-caliber orthopaedic care to Ashland, Ohio, and the surrounding communities. He is committed to athletes of all ages and levels of competition, serving as the team physician for the Ashland, Loudonville, Hillsdale, Black River and Mapleton high school athletic programs.
