About

Samer Narouze, MD, PhD, MMM, is the Chief of the Division of Pain Medicine at University Hospitals and Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at Case Western Reserve University. He also serves as a Professor of anesthesiology and surgery at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OUCOM). Dr. Narouze is board certified in anesthesiology, pain medicine, neurology headache medicine and interventional pain management.

Dr. Narouze earned his medical degree at Ain-Shams University College of Medicine, Cairo, Egypt in 1989l his PhD at Maastricht University in the Netherlands in 2012, and a Master of Medical Management (MMM) degree from Carnegie Mellon University in 2023.

Dr. Narouze is the immediate past president of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) and is widely considered the father of interventional headache management. He founded the American Interventional Headache Society (AIHS) and the Headache Medicine Board in 2015 and serves as the Chairman of the Board for the AIHS.

Active in numerous committees for national and international headache and pain organizations, Dr. Narouze has authored around 250 research papers, peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He edited several books on interventional pain and headache management and is currently the editor-in-chief of the “Annals of Headache Medicine” journal. He also serves on the editorial boards of other pain medicine journals.

Dr. Narouze has received numerous awards throughout his professional career, including the Master Educator and Innovator of the Year awards from the Cleveland Clinic. He was awarded the prestigious Excellence in Education Award from the European Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Therapy (ESRA-Pain) in 2025. He will also be receiving the top global pain recognition award – The Bonica Award – from the ASRA in 2026.
