  • Clinical Assistant Professor, CWRU School of Medicine

Brett McCoy, MD is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a subspecialty certification in sports medicine. His surgical practice includes arthroscopy of the shoulder and knee, total joint replacements, fracture repair, and treatment of soft tissue injuries. From a non-operative standpoint, he cares for a range or musculoskeletal injuries from minor aches and pains to fractures and arthritis.

A Cleveland native, Dr. McCoy joined the University Hospitals / Center for Orthopedics in 2020 after 8 years in practice, most recently serving as division head of orthopedics at Marymount Hospital.

Dr. McCoy earned a bachelor’s degree from Miami University and completed his medical training at the University of Cincinnati. After medical school, he completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Northwestern University, followed by a sports medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. During his training, Dr. McCoy had the rewarding opportunity to serve as assistant to the team physician for the Chicago Blackhawks, as well as the Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers, and Indians. After completion of his training, he served as the team physician for Cleveland State University, the Cleveland Monsters, the Lake Erie Captains and five area high schools. He has also worked as a clinical assistant professor at Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. McCoy is devoted to helping his patients and has published research pertaining to rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, meniscal tears, customized total knee replacements and Achilles tendon injuries. His book chapter publications include cartilage transplantation, ligament injuries of the knee, and injuries to the patella and patellar tendon.

Dr. McCoy was excited to join University Hospitals / Center for Orthopedics: “It’s increasingly rare to find community-based practices that maintain the thoughtful and convenient care we all prefer as patients while incorporating the technology and resources of a world-class institution.”

In his free time, Dr. McCoy loves to explore the outdoors with his rescue dogs. He also snowboards, plays ice hockey and spends a lot of time with his family and friends. He’s an avid reader who seeks to continue learning.

I found the entire experience to have moved very smoothly and professionally. I was always kept informed of what was it going to occur in approximately when I would see the doctor in person. I found the doctor extremely engaged in my problem, responded to each question I had, explain the situation and what the next procedure would be, and told me exactly what to expect and to look for once I leave the office. this particular doctor, Brett McCoy, was highly informed, knowledgeable, and showed enormous respect and concern as well as knowledge about the situation that brought me to his office.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.

As of December 31, 2016, Brett McCoy did not disclose any Outside Relationships with Industry.
