I was very pleased with the experience that I had during this appointment with Dr. Katz. I have a very long and complex history with [...] disease. I have been living with it for most of my life and was interested in getting a second opinion regarding the treatment plan I have been receiving at another health care facility. In fact Dr. Katz is the first and only Gastroenterologist that I have seen outside of this other facility in my time dealing with [...] disease, which would be 45 years. Therefore, this was obviously the first time Dr. Katz and I had met. I was very impressed by his knowledge and candor in discussing options of treatment with me and with his ability to asses my situation having never met me. He was extremely generous with his time and we spent about an hour discussing my medical history. He was attentive and respectful when I was speaking and we had a very thoughtful conversation about options for my care. He was very complimentary and respectful of my current doctor and treatment plan, but also open to providing me with his opinion of the situation in a very direct way, which I found helpful. He offered to take me on as a patient should I choose and I'm definitely considering it. It would be a huge change for me, but I felt very comfortable with Dr. Katz and felt that he's someone that I would be able to have a solid and equal doctor patient relationship with.

I respect Dr Katz questions and discussions about my concerns and respect his decisions regarding my follow up treatments.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
