About

Sara Hitchman, OD, joined University Hospitals Eye Institute in March of 2019. She practices comprehensive optometry including contact lens care and the management of ocular disease. Dr. Hitchman teaches optometry externs and ophthalmology residents as a senior instructor with Case Western Reserve University and an associate faculty member of The Ohio State University College of Optometry, Indiana University College of Optometry, and Western University of Health Sciences.

Born and raised in Butler, Ohio, Dr. Hitchman attended Mount Vernon Nazarene University, graduating with a B.S. in biology. Following her undergraduate work, she attended The Ohio State University College of Optometry where she earned her Doctorate of Optometry degree. Dr. Hitchman graduated magna cum laude and was awarded the Lyle Aloycious Gassman Award. During her time at Ohio State, Dr. Hitchman was awarded the Ocular Instruments Award of Excellence and was honored as the president of the Gold Key Association. Following optometry school, Dr. Hitchman completed an ocular disease residency at The Cincinnati Eye Institute with rotations in retina, glaucoma, anterior segment, uveitis, oculoplastics and neuro-ophthalmology. Prior to joining UH Dr. Hitchman worked in private practice and part time as an optometrist at a refractive surgery center.

Dr. Hitchman provides comprehensive eye care for adults and children including the prescription of glasses, routine and specialty contact lenses, as well as the management of eye infections and injuries. She also provides non-surgical medical management of uveitis, dry eye disease, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration. Dr. Hitchman works with the ophthalmologists to coordinate care for patients when surgical intervention is necessary. Dr. Hitchman is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the American Optometric Association and the Ohio Optometric Association. As a member of the Ohio Optometric Association Dr. Hitchman presents the RealEyes program to local pre-school and elementary school students educating them about the importance of a lifetime of eye health.
