About

Guillermo Escobar, MD, FACS, is a board-certified vascular surgeon and endovascular specialist at University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. He is highly skilled in performing the full range of open and minimally invasive endovascular surgical procedures, with particular interest in the management of patients with complex aneurysms, aortic dissections, carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease, popliteal entrapment syndrome and vertebral artery disease. He is also a recognized expert in complex aortic surgery, including open and endovascular management of mycotic aortic aneurysms.

Dr. Escobar earned his medical degree from La Salle University Medical School in Mexico City, Mexico. His postdoctoral training began with an internship in general surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, followed by a general surgery residency and research fellowship at the University of Colorado Health Science Center in Denver, Colorado. He then completed a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In addition to his clinical training, Dr. Escobar attended the Society for University Surgeons Leadership Agility Program at Northwestern University Kellogg School of Business in Evanston, Illinois, and the Professional Leadership Enrichment and Development Program at Emory University Goizueta Business School in Atlanta, Georgia.

Prior to joining UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute in 2026, Dr. Escobar was a staff surgeon at Emory University and Atlanta Veterans Affairs Hospitals. He founded Emory’s Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency and Vascular Surgery Early Specialization Fellowship programs, serving as the Program Director for these, as well as Emory’s Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program, throughout his tenure.

In addition to his clinical and administrative roles, Dr. Escobar is passionate about research and education. He has been an invited lecturer, moderator and instructor at numerous national and international medical conferences and vascular surgery courses. He also has an extensive list of peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on vascular surgery techniques and outcomes, and is co-editor of the VSITE Review Manual textbook. Well-known nationally as a vascular surgery educator, he is invited yearly as an instructor in multiple open and endovascular training courses across the country.

Dr. Escobar is an active member of a number of distinguished medical professional organizations, including the Michael DeBakey Surgical Society, Society for Vascular Surgery, Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery and the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery. In recognition of his clinical excellence and contributions to the field of vascular surgery, Dr. Escobar is the co-author of National Society Guideline manuscripts, serves as both an Item Writer and Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of Surgery’s vascular surgery certification exams and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
