Biography

Dr. Michael DeGeorgia is the Director of the Reinberger Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. He holds the Maxeen Stone and John A. Flower Endowed Chair in Neurology, is the Director of the Neurocritical Care Center and Co-Director of the Cerebrovascular Center of University Hospitals Neurological Institute, and Director of the Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program. He is Chief of Neurology at University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center and a Professor of Neurology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

An internationally recognized expert in neurocritical care and cerebrovascular disease, Dr. DeGeorgia is the author of more than 150 articles, abstracts and book chapters. A thought leader in the emerging field of medical informatics, he authored the book Neurocritical Care Informatics: Translating Raw Data into Bedside Action (Springer International Publishing AG). Dr. DeGeorgia is also committed to teaching and education. He has trained 25 neurocritical care fellows and 34 vascular neurology (stroke) fellows and is a past recipient of the Joseph M. Foley teaching award.

From 1999 to 2007, he was on staff at the Cleveland Clinic, where he was Director of the Neurology-Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit and Head of the Neurological Intensive Care Program. From 1997-1999, he was Director of the Neurocritical Care and Stroke Program at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York.

Dr. DeGeorgia earned his medical degree from the Northeast Ohio Medical University after completing a six-year BS/MD program. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center, a Neurology residency at Tufts University-New England Medical Center, and a Neurocritical Care fellowship at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Neurology, Vascular Neurology, and Neurocritical Care and is an honorary fellow of the American College of Physicians, American Heart Association, American College of Critical Care Medicine, and Neurocritical Care Society.

Dr. DeGeorgia is the founding Director of the Center for Music and Medicine, a collaboration between musicians, cognitive scientists, music therapists, and physicians in Northeastern Ohio. He is annually listed as one of "America's Best Doctors" and is a frequent health commentator for ABC World News Tonight, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and other media outlets. In his spare time, he plays in a rock band called "The Codes."

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities.
