University Hospitals (UH) Cleveland Medical Center, in conjunction with Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, offers a comprehensive educational and training experience to physicians interested in anatomic and clinical pathology and its subspecialties.  In keeping with a long history and strong tradition of teaching, research, and patient care dating back nearly 100 years, we continue to train residents in alignment with the mission of UH: To Heal.  To Teach.  To Discover.

To Heal: University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center Department of Pathology sits at the center of a multi-hospital network serving a diverse patient population that enables residents to encounter an optimal mixture of primary and tertiary care issues.  Our residents are trained to care for patients of greater Cleveland and beyond by providing accurate and timely macroscopic and microscopic diagnoses in anatomic pathology, serve as a consultant in clinical pathology, as well as provide bedside therapeutic interventions.

To Teach: Education is one of the primary missions of University Hospitals Department of Pathology.  The department’s large complement of anatomic and clinical pathology faculty provides supervision and instruction at all levels of training, and apprenticeship is a key teaching method as residents work alongside practicing pathologists.  Residents’ clinical education is supplemented with a noon lecture series on a 2-year cycle.  As a member of graduate medical education, residents are at a pivot point in their role as a learner, actively transitioning towards independent lifelong learning.  Thus, our residents hone their skills to assume this role through active engagement in journal clubs, tumor board, and consensus conferences.

To Discover: The CWRU School of Medicine is one of the nation’s leading medical research centers, and residents are encouraged to participate in scholarly activity both within the department and outside of it.  Most importantly, our program serves to help individual residents discover themselves; discover their niche as a pathologist as well as additional professional roles they may like to pursue in leadership, education, and research.  

We hope our website allows you to gain an appreciation for our department and our surrounding community.  The proximity of the hospital to some of Cleveland’s finest residential areas, cultural institutions, and recreation facilities affords our residents attractive and affordable housing, short commutes, and a wealth of activities outside of work.
