UH Experts Diagnose and Treat Diseases of the Esophagus
The human digestive system is essentially one long, muscular tube that extends from the mouth to the anus. The esophagus is the first portion of that long tube, connecting the mouth and throat with the stomach.
Your health is important. Don’t delay care.To schedule an in-person or virtual consultation with a UH digestive health specialist, call 1-866-UH4-CARE.
The digestive process begins when the food we eat and swallow enters the esophagus. As the food moves down the esophagus, muscles at the top open and close automatically to keep food from going down the nearby windpipe and into the lungs. These muscles are called the upper esophageal sphincter or UES. Muscles at the bottom of the esophagus – the lower esophageal sphincter or LES – open automatically to allow food to enter the stomach and then close to keep it there. Once the food is in the stomach, enzymes and acids are released to break it down so the body can use the nutrients.
There are many diseases and conditions that can affect the esophagus and lead to common complaints such as acid reflux or more complex diseases such as Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer. The multidisciplinary team of digestive health experts at University Hospitals can diagnose and treat the full spectrum of diseases and conditions that affect the esophagus, from the most common to the most complex. The team is equipped and experienced in advanced endoscopy, minimally invasive and robotic surgery if necessary. Working together, our team will develop a treatment plan for each patient that will give them the best chance for an optimal outcome.
In-Person and Virtual Appointments Available
At University Hospitals we offer the convenience of both in-person and virtual consultations. For many patients, a virtual appointment may be ideal, offering the following benefits:
- Prompt evaluation and treatment. Virtual consults are scheduled within 24 – 48 hours after you contact us so the most effective treatment(s) for you can be determined and quickly begin. Establishing a trusting relationship with one of our specialists, understanding your options and being involved in your own treatment decisions can help reduce anxiety throughout your treatment and recovery journey.
- Convenience. With a virtual consult there is no need to travel. You can talk to one of our specialists from the comfort of your own home or office.
- Affordable. Virtual consultations are among the most affordable options for care, costing about the same as a traditional office visit copay. All major insurance plans are accepted.
- Second opinion consults available. If you have already spoken to a doctor about your treatment options, it is always beneficial to get a second opinion. UH virtual consultations are offered for both initial and second opinion appointments.
