Estate Gift Aids UH Parma Medical Center

The late Margaret Tomec
The late Margaret Tomec

Margaret Tomec was a no-nonsense, “independent woman” long before the term became part of popular culture. An only child, she never married or had children, and supported herself as an administrative. assistant and bookkeeper. A lifelong Clevelander, she was active in civic organizations, loved to read books related to medical science, dabbled in the stock market and was an engaging conversationalist.

Upon retirement, she began a second career as a gift shop volunteer at UH Parma Medical Center. For 30 years, Margaret was the welcoming face behind the cash register, helping visitors select flowers, cards and gifts for patients. She greatly enjoyed the companionship of fellow volunteers and hospital staff who became her family.

At 90 years old, Margaret reluctantly retired again due to debilitating back issues. “Margaret was an extraordinary friend, and so dedicated to supporting the hospital through her volunteerism,” said Marcia Ferguson, Executive Director of Parma Hospital Health Care Foundation.

Margaret passed at the age of 97 in January 2018, but not before leaving one last gift to UH Parma Medical Center. Having named the foundation the sole recipient of her estate – in excess of $1 million – hers is the largest and most transformative gift in the hospital’s history. Margaret’s incredible generosity will help UH Parma Medical Center continue to meet the community’s greatest needs.

Margaret leaves behind a life story of volunteerism and commitment to improving healthcare in her home town. Equal parts self-sufficient and selfless, she will be fondly remembered for her indelible spirit and lasting legacy to the community she called home.
