Study Purpose
The goal of this study is to see if we can find blood markers that show damage to a part of heart cells after cardiac arrest (when the heart stops beating.) We're focused on the mitochondria, which are the parts of the cell that make energy. We think that certain proteins in the mitochondria are more affected when there’s no blood flow during cardiac arrest. We want to test blood to measure damage to these proteins. To do this, we will check for specific mitochondrial proteins, like humanin, in the blood of people who’ve had a cardiac arrest and compare them to healthy people.
