Bo’s corner: Heart-healthy YOU
What do you and Bo the Take Care Bear have in common? Bo eats healthy foods and exercises every day to keep his heart healthy. Just like Bo, it is important for kids to practice heart-healthy habits, too.
Tasty – and healthy – snacks
What kind of healthy snack is your favorite? Here are some healthy snack ideas from Bo. Ask your mom or dad about adding these to the grocery list:
- Dried fruit and nuts
- Low-fat yogurt with fruit
- Whole-grain crackers with hummus
Remember to always ask a grown-up whether it is OK to have a snack before getting one.
Move more
Kids need at least an hour of exercise a day. Here are some tips for ways to exercise that you can try out yourself:
- Find an activity you enjoy. Try lots of things to find out what you like best. You might like sports, yoga, dance or skateboarding.
- Help your mom or dad sweep and mop the floor, vacuum the carpet or wash the windows.
- Do sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups and jumping jacks.
Remember to drink lots of water before and after you exercise.
Special spirals
Tired of eating the same old sandwich for lunch? Roll up the ingredients in a tortilla to make a brand-new lunchbox treat that is fun and easy to eat.
Directions
- Spread low-fat cream cheese all around a whole-wheat tortilla.
- On top, place thin slices of low-fat turkey breast and some fresh baby spinach leaves.
- Roll up the tortilla tightly.
- Let a grown-up help you cut the tortilla roll into 1-inch slices.
- Lay the pieces flat to see the swirly spiral and enjoy.
