Marco Costa

Cardiology
Interventional Cardiology

  • President, University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute
  • Professor of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
  • Chief Innovation Officer, University Hospitals
  • Director, Interventional Cardiovascular Center, University Hospitals

Dr. Costa is an interventional cardiologist and is specialized in cardiovascular medicine, peripheral vascular intervention, and structural and valvular heart disease interventions. He established collaborations in 2002 with the University of Central Florida to develop an optical coherence tomography (OCT) catheter for intravascular imaging, allowing for much higher resolution images than previously possible. He performed the first OCT procedure in the U.S. in 2010 following Food and Drug Administration approval. He participated in the first clinical experience with drug eluting stents in humans worldwide and coordinated one of the largest multicenter angiographic studies in patients treated with drug-eluting stents performed in the U.S. Dr. Costa established the Cardiovascular Imaging Core Laboratory at University Hospitals in 2007.

Sanjay Rajagopalan, MD, FACC, FAHA

Sanjay Rajagopalan
  • Chief, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Director, Cardiovascular Research Institute
  • Director, Cardiovascular CT and MRI
  • Herman K. Hellerstein Professor of Cardiovascular Research
  • Professor of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine

Dr. Rajagopalan completed clinical and research fellowships in cardiovascular medicine and vascular biology at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, and advanced cardiovascular imaging training at Duke University. Dr. Rajagopalan is among an elite group of physician investigators whose work has transformed perceptions of cardiovascular disease and facilitated the development of newer methodologies and approaches to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease. He is a leading authority in advancing newer and innovative noninvasive approaches for the diagnosis of complex cardiovascular disorders. Dr. Rajagopalan’s laboratory has been continually funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
