Meet the Midwives

Our philosophy is consistent with the American College of Nurse Midwifery (ACNM). It is our belief that birth is a life cycle event that should be nurtured not treated. Midwifery care emphasizes continuity, compassion and partnership, advocates nonintervention in the normal process, and promotes health throughout life. It is through prevention and education health can be optimized.

History of Midwifery at University Hospitals St. John Medical Center

Since November 1997 Midwifery Care has been an integral part of Women's Services. Midwives provide care during pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum. Midwives are also available for gynecologic health concerns, including pap tests and breast exams. The midwives are committed to individualized care. In 1999, prompted by patient request, a comprehensive Water Birth program was initiated. The midwives have assisted in over 200 water births. In 2009 the first in-hospital birth center opened at UH St. John Medical Center. A focus group of women was formed and the common theme was a homelike birth with a "safety net." The Holistic Birth Center is an extraordinary asset to families in the community.

Best of Both Worlds

Holistic BirthingMidwives are skilled in caring for low risk women. At UH St. John Medical Center the nurse midwives work in collaboration with a Board Certified OB/GYN. A physician is always available in the hospital in the event of an emergency. If the services of a physician become necessary, you do not lose the support of your midwife. The midwife will continue to provide educational and emotional support while the physician provides the medical expertise needed.
