Neurocritical Care Center

University Hospitals Delivers Prompt, Intensive Neurological Care

University Hospitals Neurological Institute’s world-renowned Neurocritical Care Center provides continuous monitoring and treatment for patients who are critically ill, need postoperative care or require intensive neurological monitoring in the Beacon Award-winning Reinberger Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit.

As a UH-designated Center of Excellence, the Neurocritical Care Center brings together leading experts from a variety of disciplines that collaborate using the latest clinical advances and technologies. Many are involved in nationally funded research that may lead to future innovations in medical care.

The center offers the highest level of neurological intensive care available. It is one of only a few facilities of its caliber in the country and the only center of its kind in the Midwest.

Our center is staffed by full-time neurological and critical care specialists who have received advanced training and certification in neurocritical care. Studies show that involvement of a dedicated neurological intensive care team correlates to better patient outcomes, significant reductions in length of stay, and lower costs.

Additionally, our Reinberger Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit has earned the prestigious Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence. This is a top honor from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses recognizing nursing excellence recognizing the unit’s commitment to superior quality standards in nurse recruitment and retention, patient outcomes, staff training, healthy work environments, leadership and evidence-based practice and clinical research.

Continued Leadership in Neurocritical Care

UH introduced the world to neurological intensive care medicine nearly three decades ago. Our textbook, Critical Care Neurology and Neurosurgery, remains the standard in the field.

Since its beginning, the Neurocritical Care Center has earned international notoriety for training physicians worldwide. UH is one of only a handful of hospitals in the U.S. that offers a fellowship in neurocritical care for doctors in training. In addition, our annual international continuing medical education (CME) conference is considered to be the benchmark meeting for the field.

The Neurocritical Care Center leverages all the neurocritical care resources at UH to improve the quality of patient care. The center also provides neurocritical care training to UH staff and specialists based at community hospitals.

In addition, our neurology experts work to promote education, improve communication, advance administrative efficiency and coordinate advanced research opportunities.
