The Urologic Oncology Center Performs Laparoscopic Procedures to Help Patients Heal Faster and with Less Pain

The Urologic Oncology Center team of expert surgeons offers leading-edge laparoscopic procedures for the treatment of prostate cancer. Our team of health care professionals not only performs thousands of these sophisticated procedures each year, but they also play an integral role in the research, development and implementation of these treatments.

Patients with prostate cancer can count on our expert surgeons to educate them regarding the many advantages as well as possible disadvantages related to a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.

What is a Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy?

During a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, a University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center surgeon inserts a lighted viewing instrument (laparoscope) into the pelvic region through one tiny incision. Unlike an open prostatectomy, where a surgeon uses a large abdominal incision to access the prostate, the laparoscopic radical prostatectomy allows the physician to examine and remove the prostate through a one-inch incision.

The advantages for a patient who undergoes laparoscopic radical prostatectomy as opposed to an open prostatectomy include:

  • Reduced blood loss, which decreases the chance of needing a blood transfusion
  • Smaller incisions, which translate to reduced pain and a shorter recovery
  • Decreased need for pain medication
  • Shorter hospital stay, leading to a faster return to everyday living
  • Spared nerves, which preserve the patient’s urinary and sexual function
