Treatment for Hematological Disorders and Benign Blood Cancer

Leading Expertise in the Testing, Diagnosis and Treatment of Benign Blood Disease

University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center has proven expertise and experience in testing, treating and managing benign hematologic disease.

The strategies for managing benign blood disorders are distinctly different to the treatments used for malignant blood diseases like leukemia and lymphoma, except for the management of some acquired hemolytic anemias.

Multidisciplinary Approach to Care

Because hematologic disorders can be medically complex, a team approach to care is critical. Working closely with related specialists, our experts collaboratively plan the best possible strategy for each individual. We also have access to resources from University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, the only hemophilia center in Northeast Ohio and one of only five in the state. Our goal is to treat the whole patient, while taking into account his or her unique medical, physical and emotional needs.

Sickle Cell Disease Program

An example of our multidisciplinary approach to care is our sickle cell disease program, which offers a holistic, specialized service tailored to sickle cell patients of all ages. The sickle cell program includes:

  • Doctors specializing in adult sickle cell disease
  • Experts focused on childhood sickle cell disease from University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s Sickle Cell Anemia Center
  • Pain management experts
  • Dedicated nurse practitioners
  • Dedicated social workers and other support staff
  • Other medical specialists who are on call as needed

The program provides our patients with specialized attention. From pain relief to medication consultation, the entire program is focused on sickle cell disease management. It includes accessible, specialized care that is available on a fast-track basis when necessary. Our team takes the time to get to know each patient and develop a long-term relationship. We understand that care is more effective when delivered by experts who know the details of each individual’s condition.

At UH Seidman Cancer Center, we work hard to provide the necessary clinical services as quickly as possible. Our goal is to deliver the best outcomes, along with ongoing support that addresses the patient’s social and psychological needs.
