Female Pelvic Health

Comprehensive Care for Female Pelvic Floor Disorders

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and ligaments that form a “sling” between the pubic bone and the coccyx (tailbone). This muscular hammock supports the pelvic organs which, in women, include the uterus, bladder, vagina, cervix and rectum (the lowest portion of the bowel). When the pelvic floor is healthy, it helps to maintain the function of these organs and keep them in the correct position within the pelvic cavity.

A Weak Pelvic Floor Can Lead to a Variety of Conditions

If the muscles of the female pelvic floor become weakened or damaged, it can lead to a variety of conditions including urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Pelvic floor problems in women are very common, affecting as many as one in three women. The most common causes of pelvic floor dysfunction in women are childbirth (especially multiple births), post-surgical complications and age-related changes. Other risk factors include obesity and genetic predisposition.
